Rugby’s Back!

Rugby Victoria welcome the Victorian Government’s announcement of a further relaxation of restrictions from 11.59 on 17 June, allowing Rugby to return across Victoria this Saturday.

While it’s great that we can return to Rugby this weekend, there will be some restrictions in place.

Summary of key changes and what they mean for community Rugby:

Travel restrictions lifted:

  • 25km travel restrictions have been lifted and people can now travel between regional Victoria and Metro Melbourne.

Metropolitan Melbourne community sport:

  • Competition for seniors and juniors can resume with the minimum number of people required to participate and facilitate the activity.
  • No more than 50 people indoors at one time
  • People necessary for events and participation, including those who need to accompany children, such as parents, guardians and carers, as well as, trainers, medics, coaches and referees, can attend matches and training.
  • Spectators not allowed

Regional Victoria community sport:

  • Open for all ages, training and competition
  • Maximum venue capacity 300 per indoor space and outdoor patron cap of 1000 people

We will continue to update our clubs and affiliates on key information once the new Restricted Activity Directions (RAD) are released on Friday by the Chief Health Officer.

After consultation with the Club Presidents, we are pleased to provide you with the following update regarding the competition structures.

Seniors

  • Maintain a 14-round season.
  • The fixtures will remain as scheduled with round 9 to be played on 19 June.
  • Round 7 will be played on 7 August and Round 8 will be played on 10 July.
  • The season will be pushed back one week with the Senior Grand Finals to be played on 28 August.

Juniors

  • Maintain a 14-round season.
  • The fixtures will remain as scheduled with Round 5 to be played on 19 June 2021.
  • There will be a two-week season break for School holidays on 3 and 10 July.
  • A competition round will be played on 28 August.
  • The season will be pushed back one week with Junior Grand Finals to be played on 18 September.
  • The Melbourne Rebels U18s team were due to have their last 2 games for 2021 against the Western Force and Queensland Reds on 11 June and 20 June respectively. Due to Victoria’s recent outbreak and subsequent lockdown Rugby Australia had to reschedule these matches to the only available window they had available which is 12 September and 18 September.
  • After consultation with clubs, the RV U18 competition will play a competition round on 3 July and 10 July. The season will be reduced by one round to 13 rounds with the Grand Final to be played on Senior Grand Final Day (28 August).
