The U18 School 7s Rugby Gala Day was held at Power House Rugby Club this week with 8 teams from 6 schools participating across both boy’s and girl’s competitions.
The standard of play across the day was of a high level, with some new to the game and our regular’s fighting for the final spot. We look forward to having more schools involved over the next few years and we believe that with our junior girl’s pathway competitions we will see a greater interest from girl’s teams entering.
Contesting the U18s Girls Grand Final, in what is always a tight contest, was Fountain Gate and The Grange. With Fountain Gate proving too strong in the end to win 28 – 21. Fantastic to see the skill level and development of these two girl’s teams improving every time they meet, thanks to the work being done at both schools through their rugby school academies.
The U18s Boys Grand Final saw The Grange take on Noble Park, with both teams being quite strong throughout their pool games. With scores level at full time 19 all, we went to golden point and saw The Grange get a run on the outside to score and kick the conversion to make them the winners over Noble Park 26 – 19. Well done to both teams on a tightly contested and high-level game of rugby 7s.
Completing what was a great day of rugby was the presence of Melbourne Rebels player Richard Hardwick who presented to our winning teams and also awarded the Most Promising Players and Players of the Finals awards.
Congratulations to the following students:
- U18 Girls Most Promising Player: Grace Tooala (The Grange)
- U18 Boys Most Promising Player: Liam Stone (The Grange)
- U18 Girls Player of the Final: Destiny Tuhi (Fountain Gate)
- U18 Boys Player of the Final: Johnny Lalatoa (Noble Park)
On behalf of the Development Team we would like to thank all staff and volunteers who helped with the running of the day and particularly extend our gratitude to the schools, teachers and players for participating in this event.
A big thank you must also go to Richard Hardwick and Power House Rugby Club, and in particular Bryan and Nick, who set-up, packed down and ran a BBQ for the day.
