The Dewar Shield has a rich history spanning over 100 years. Eight clubs participate in the Dewar Shield competition, Box Hill, Endeavour Hills, Footscray, Harlequin, Melbourne, Melbourne University, Moorabbin and Power House.

Each club has three senior grades that participate in the following divisions:

• VAILO Dewar Shield
• Dewar Shield Reserves (Penwill Cup)
• Dewar Shield 3rd Grade (Mawhinney Cup)

The VAILO Dewar Shield Premiership title for 2023 was won by Harlequin Rugby Club.

The Penwill Cup for the Dewar Shield Reserves Premiership title for 2023 was won by Footscray Rugby Club.

The Mawhinney Cup for the Dewar Shield 3rd Grade Premiership title for 2023 was won by Moorabbin Rugby Club.
