On behalf of the Victorian rugby community, Rugby Victoria offers our deepest condolences to Ruhan’s family and honours the legacy left behind by a Victorian rugby stalwart.

An integral club member of Harlequin Rugby Club for over 15 years, Ruhan served as Harlequin Director of Coaching, having also coached several Junior sides, VSRU Schools, Victorian Junior Representative teams and Harlequin Senior teams.

One of Ruhan’s greatest coaching achievements was guiding Harlequin to the Dewar Shield Premiership in 2013, a feat the club has replicated a decade later.

Ruhan’s friendship, influence and care for Harlequin club members, players and volunteers is a credit to the character of a man who has helped shape the landscape of modern Victorian rugby.

His leadership of the Maciu Vosa Trust Fund and personal care for Maciu, Kylie and their family is just one example of the selflessness of a great rugby man.

Rugby Victoria President, Neil Hay, expressed his condolences to the Victorian rugby community.

“We are all deeply saddened to hear of Ruhan’s passing,” said Hay.

“Today, we are mourning the loss of a true leader of Victorian Rugby. From premiership glory to his selfless charity work off-field, Ruhan’s generosity epitomises the selflessness of not only a true rugby man, but a family man.”

“We are incredibly grateful for his lasting contributions and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family at this difficult time. May his legacy continue to inspire generations of players, supporters, and volunteers across Victoria for years to come.”

Members of the Victorian rugby community can celebrate the life of Ruhan van Zyl, Friday September 8 from 2:00PM at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club, 489 Glenferrie Rd. Those attending are encouraged to wear their rugby colours as a symbol of Ruhan's vibrant personality.
