Wheelchair Rugby Victoria
Since its inclusion to the Paralympic Games in 2000, wheelchair rugby’s popularity has taken off worldwide.
Played on a hardwood basketball court over four, eight-minute quarters, two teams battle it out using their specially designed wheelchairs to crash, block and trap their opponents to stop them from scoring a goal – or try. A try is achieved when a player crosses the opposition’s goal line with possession of the ball.
Despite being known for its intensity, wheelchair rugby is a family-friendly and accessible sport that all genders can play. Men and women even play on the same team. The classification system of wheelchair rugby ensures that players with a wide range of functionality to compete on a level playing field.
Exciting for both players and spectators alike, wheelchair rugby incorporates elements of several sports including ice hockey style checking, the ball movement of basketball, and the scoring of rugby while using a soft-touch style volleyball for fast passes.
While Wheelchair rugby is a sport for people with physical disabilities, it also offers opportunities for officials, volunteers and supporters to be part of the community. Whether you're new to the sport, returning to competition, there's a place for you in wheelchair rugby.
