Semi Final time. Remember those?! Tomorrow sees our first senior semi finals since 2019, and we have some enthralling matchups across six venues this weekend.

We did our best crystall ball gazing to reveal who we think will be coming out on top in the opening wekend of the finals.

Dewar Shield
Harlequins vs Melbourne (ref: Shannon McLachlan)

Major semi – The two big dogs square off again to see who goes straight through to the big dance and who has a fight on their hands next week.

Quins have comfortably taken the honours between the teams this year but finals footy is different. Quins at home will be a tough proposition but the Unicorns know how to play on the big stage.

Prediction: Quins backrow could be the difference in this game and if they fire then its Harlequins by 10 points and into the Grand Final.

Moorabbin vs Power House (ref: Amber McLachlan)

Minor Semi – Power House won the scramble for 4thspot with a big win against Moorabbin who are their opponents this weekend for second week in a row.

There were heart palpitations across Melbourne with Endeavour and House not knowing who was going through until the last second of the regular season. Its been a great competition so far this year and these two teams have proven they can beat anyone on their day and a capable finalists.

The loser is gone and the winner fights again next week.

Prediction: Look for Moorabbin at home to reverse last week’s result and progress to preliminary final over a gallant House by 8.

Premiership
Brimbank vs Northern (ref:Jason Breytenbach)

Major semi – The unbeaten Bucks are red hot favourites to win it all but Northern showed last time they played that they won’t give up without a fight.

This could be a close one but look for Brimbank to continue the march to glory and win by 10.

Casey vs Kiwi Hawthorn (ref: David Wall)

Minor semi - Another big game to see who keeps their season alive.

Casey looked to have more fire power during regular season and they will be up for it in their finals debut but Kiwi Hawthorn have some wily veterans that know about big games.

Kiwis to win in a boil over by 5 points.

Dewar Shield seconds
Major semi: Harlequins vs Melbourne (ref: Rob Whyte)

A tight game as these two teams are so evenly matched.

Quins to get home on the bell.

Minor semi: Box Hill vs Moorabbin (ref:Paul Candy)

Box Hills only team in the finals so will get big support and may have too much depth for Moorabbin.

Broncos to gallop on into to next week.

Dewar Shield thirds
Major semi: Power House vs Harlequins (ref:Aaron Reid)

House have been the best team all year with little bothering them on their march.

Not even a game in Quins territiory will stop the House from coming up trumps.

Minor semi: Endeavour Hills vs Melbourne Uni (ref:Glen McFadden)

The big Eagles against the fast students. Two different game styles collide.

Endeavour to get home in a nail-biter.

Premiership Reserves
Major semi:  Cerberus vs Shepparton (ref:Gary Howell)

The dogs will have plenty of bite and will get up by 8 over the country boys.

Minor semi: Maroondah vs Brimbank (ref: Matthew Parker)

The Maroondah home ground advantage will be the difference. Griffins by 8

Referee milestones

This weekend sees some more amazing milestones being achieved by our Victorian whistle-blower’s.

Congratulations to former Rugby Victoria president Bill Gillies and Stephan Hubert on notching up 400 games refereeing this weekend. It is an amazing achievement and they become the first two refs to officially achieve this in Victoria. Thank you for your dedication and service to our game over many, many years.

Matt Parker reaches his 50 games this weekend. Well done Matt and we look forward to seeing many more games from you.

Well done to the power couple of Victorian refereeing; Amber and Shannon McLachlan both be taking charge of Dewar Shield semis this weekend.
