The U18 Vic School 7s State Championships was this year held at Wyndham Rugby Club with 10 teams from 7 schools participating across both boy’s and girl’s competitions.

It was awesome to see our students back out on the field competing against each other, with some new schools involved this year.

The U18 Boys Grand Final saw two of our Rugby School Academies go head-to-head, with Fountain Gate Secondary College taking on The Grange P-12 College. Both schools have won this Championship over the last few years and have several Melbourne Rebels Academy players scattered amongst their squads, so it was always going to be a tough and exciting battle. However, in the end, Fountain Gate Secondary College proved two strong, taking out the win 26-7.

In the U18 Girls Grand Final we saw new contender Tarneit Senior College take on The Grange P-12 College. It was a hard-fought contest throughout the day, but The Grange P-12 College remained consistent throughout all their games and proved why they were undefeated throughout the day winning 29-0. It was also great to see our two Melbourne University Aon7s players, Kirsty Matapa (The Grange P-12 College) and Jade Te Aute (Tarneit Senior College) go head-to-head. Both players were initially scouted at previous Gala Days and are now both playing at state level.

Congratulations to the following players who played exceptionally throughout the day and into their Grand Final match.

  • U18 Boys Player of the Day: Lebron Naea (Fountain Gate)
  • U18 Girls Player of the Day: Jade Te Aute (Tarneit Senior College)

On behalf of the Development Team we would like to thank all staff, referees and volunteers who helped with the running of the day and particularly extend our gratitude to the schools, teachers and players for participating in this event. A big thankyou must also go to Wyndham Rugby Club, and particularly Ean Drummond, who set-up, packed down and ran a canteen throughout the day. Without the support of our clubs these days are unable to go ahead!
