U85kg Pilot Competition FAQs
The Rugby Victoria U85kg Competition is a weight-restricted, men's XV-a-side pilot competition commencing in 2025.
The pilot is designed to address weight-based barriers to participation and provide alternative playing opportunity to regular club rugby competitions for male participants including but not limited to school-leavers, university students, and special interest groups.
Yes, World Rugby Laws will apply to the pilot competition, including permitted Game On Law Variations as prescribed by the Competition Managers.
The full Competition Rules can be viewed online here.
The 2025 pilot competition is scheduled to run from March to May 2025 (Tertiary Education Semester 1), with all matches to be played on a Wednesday evening.
The timing of the pilot has been identified to commence prior to, and conclude within, the first few rounds of the regular club competition season.
Wednesday evening has been selected to avoid (where possible) the conflict with regular club training evenings (typically Tuesday and Thursday), as well as weekend commitments and regular club season matches (once club competitions have commenced).
It is hoped that following participation in the pilot competition, some participants may choose to continue their involvement in rugby with clubs in the regular competition.
All matches will be hosted at Rugby Victoria's new facility at La Trobe University Sports Park | Kingsbury Dr, Bundoora (https://maps.app.goo.gl/T174AuTqmswD52Zt9).
Playing fees for the 2025 pilot are yet to be announced, with confirmation to be provided and communicated via these FAQs and webpage in January 2025.
