Rugby Victoria is proud to announce that emerging talents Hamish Ward (Brighton Grammar School, Melbourne Rugby Club) and Sione Finau (Melton Warriors) have signed Youth Development Contracts with Rugby Australia — A great reflection of the quality and potential of emerging Victorian players.
Hamish, who has represented Australia at U16 level, and Sione, a standout performer within the Rugby Vic U16 program, have both earned national contracts following consistent performances and strong commitment to their development. Their signings add to the momentum within the Victorian system, joining Halaliku Lauhingoa (Scotch College), who was previously contracted by Rugby Australia after an impressive performance in the 2024 Australia U16 side. Collectively, the trio highlight the growing depth of talent emerging from Victoria and progressing into national programs.
The three players have come through Rugby Victoria’s development pathway, demonstrating the work ethic, coachability, and performance standards required to transition into higher-level environments. Their progression reflects the alignment between state and national programs, providing clear and accessible opportunities for Victorian athletes.
Braydon Peterson, Head of Elite Pathways, Rugby Victoria, said: “This is a really positive moment for our pathway. To have Hamish and Sione now join Halaliku as nationally contracted players shows the depth of talent we’re developing in Victoria. Halaliku and Hamish have already shown their capability on the national stage with Australia U16s, while Sione’s selection is a great example of how strong performances within our Victorian programs are being recognised. It reinforces that our athletes can see a clear connection between what they’re doing here in Victoria and the opportunities available within the national system.”
Rugby Australia National Pathways Manager, Nic Henderson, added: “Identifying and supporting talent from across the country is critical to the future of Australian rugby, and it’s pleasing to see multiple players emerging from Victoria. Hamish and Sione have both demonstrated strong potential, and alongside Halaliku, they reflect the progress being made within the Victorian pathway system in preparing players for national programs.”
These signings further reinforce the continued growth of rugby in Victoria and the effectiveness of a connected pathway that supports athletes from local environments through to national representation.
Rugby Victoria looks forward to supporting all three players as they continue their development within the national system.
