The U18 School 7s Rugby Gala Day was held at Power House Rugby Club this week with 25 teams from 13 schools participating across both boy’s and girl’s competitions.
The standard of play across the day was of a high level, despite many schools entering teams with limited exposure to the game.
The volume of teams was such that all pool games were played x-field before finals being played on full field.
This variation provided the opportunity for teams to showcase both power, speed and in general an entertaining brand of 7s rugby.
Contesting the boy’s semi-finals were pool winners The Grange, Sunshine College, Parade College and rounding out the four, was the next highest qualifier Keysborough College.
In the end, The Grange showcased why they are regular favourites overpowering Sunshine College in the final 45 - 7.
The teams who progressed to the girl’s semi-finals were Sunshine College, Keysborough College, Fountain Gate and Braybrook SC.
In the end, it was Fountain Gates superior knowledge and skill level on a bigger field that was a telling factor in determining the days winner.
Fountain Gate powered to a 36 - 0 win over Sunshine College.
Completing what was a great day of rugby was the presence of the Melbourne Rebels playing squad and off-field staff who were present for all finals and presentations, making themselves readily available to all participants who wanted to rub shoulders with their idols.
